GlassRoots Studio in Newark NJ was started with the idea that glassmaking, which involves the danger and fascination of fire, can engage at-risk youth. Now 16 years later, over 16,000 students have experienced glassmaking, and the chemistry, physics, history, and math involved with glass. Glassmaking encourages teamwork, focus and, because of its inherent risks, control and patience. Students not only make glass art pieces, but sell their work, and learn pricing, marketing and how to write a business plan.

Each glass item purchased from GlassRoots helps fund programs for students, whose hard work, creativity, and perseverance give all of this meaning.

Adults can also learn the glass arts at GlassRoots. Exciting weekend and evening classes. www.glassroots.org
